Testimonials

At both the Glendora and Pomona Valley After Stroke Centers our day begins at 9 a.m. with a big welcome from staff and volunteers.   You may bring a lunch or you can order  lunch when you sign-in. Lunch prices range from $1.50 to $2.25. A snack table is available with coffee, punch, and a few "munchies"  throughout the morning.

Once you are signed-in, there are a variety of options depending on your desires and needs.

9:00 a.m. - 10:50 a.m. Re-Socialization activities - includes playing cards, lively discussions, seasonal crafts, or just visiting.

9:30 a.m. - 10:50 a.m. Re-Learning activities - Reading, writing, and speech taught by a credentialed teacher and volunteers. We also have a one-on-one computer program  for assisting the aphasic stroke survivor. Volunteers monitor all relearning activities.

9:00 a.m. - 10:50 a.m. Current Events - This is a discussion (or listening) group that is lead by a volunteer.

9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. Caregiver Support Group - This informal discussion group is lead by a certificated counselor and offers help and resources in coping with the everyday issues that confront caregivers.

11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Circle Time We welcome new members and make announcements about upcoming events, new activities, trips, etc. We celebrate milestones experienced by our "strokers", and caregivers, birthdays, or other special events. Fifteen minutes of Circle Time is devoted to exercise from either standing and sitting positions.  We have sing-alongs including our very own theme song. The bulk of our Circle Time is a special program arranged for that day. It could be a speaker, a play, entertainment, or  "strokers" telling us more about themselves. The activities are listed in our printed "Calendar Of Events" that is distributed to our stroke families each month.

12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. Lunch and Re-Socialization - Whether you bring your own lunch or order a lunch from the center, lunchtime offers a great opportunity to make new friends, visit with old friends, or just take a needed rest from the activities.

1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. Stroke Support Group - This informal group is lead by a certificated counselor and offers help to the stroke survivor in coping with the everyday issues that may occur. This is an excellent place to hear and share problems and solutions associated with after stroke recovery.

2:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Until Next Week - Participants get ready for bus pick-up or rides home.

In addition to the weekly meetings, there are about 6 "field trips" a year. Bus transportation  (with a chair lift) is available. These trips occur on days when we do not meet at the centers.
